Sky Sports has been billing every footballing Sunday as ‘Super’ for as long as anyone can remember. However, Sunday, 19th April 2026, was more than worthy of the name. Indeed, the whole matchweek, round 33 of the Premier League season, was brilliant, with Manchester City versus Arsenal, the Merseyside derby, and Chelsea versus Manchester United being the pick of the games.
Aside from those blockbusters, we had two clashes featuring four of the six sides battling relegation, two London derbies, bags of late drama and plenty of goals. The round began with the early kick-off between Brentford and Fulham. That ended 0-0, Brentford’s fifth PL draw in a row. It also ended with a 0-0 bore draw in the other London derby between Crystal Palace and West Ham.
However, the eight games in between produced a massive 29 goals, and all the results have had big ramifications for the table and the season as a whole. Let’s take it from the top…
City Edge Gunners in Surprisingly Exciting Clash
Given a draw would have been an excellent result for Arsenal at the Etihad, keeping them firmly in control of the title race, it was expected that Mikel Arteta’s men, hardly the most expansive and exciting of sides at the best of times, would sit back and look to play on the break. Form and momentum suggested Man City might win easily but with so much at stake a 0-0 draw or 1-0 win for either side looked a real possibility.
Those expecting a cagey game, with City pinning the Gunners back but without much real action or excitement, were pleasantly surprised. We got an open and at times thrilling clash with both teams creating several clear chances that, by and large, they missed.
In the end, City edged it 2-1 and were just about good value for the win. Really, though, this game was not about the performance, who played well or who deserved what. It was about one thing only: the result.
The win for Pep Guardiola’s men has turned the title race on its head. The Gunners have seemed sure to finally end their PL drought for most of the season, but now it is City who, despite remaining second, are odds-on favourites for more glory.
This win moved Guardiola’s side to within three points of Arsenal, but City have a game in hand. Win that, and they will move to the top, and their form looks so much better than the Gunners’ right now. The title race seems highly likely to go to the wire, assuming that Arteta can get his team back to winning ways after suffering their first consecutive league defeats since 2023!
Spurs Suffer Cruel Blow and Looking in Serious Trouble
Tottenham have not won a league game since they beat Crystal Palace, narrowly, back on 28th December 2025. That is now 15 Premier League games without a victory, and they have lost nine of those. In fact, they have only recorded one league victory since the 15th round of Premier League matches.
However you look at it, their form, be that over the last six games (two points), 10 games (three points) or even 20 games (just 13 points from a possible 60), is among the worst in the division (second only to Burnley, although even worse than the Clarets over 10 matches). It is unequivocally relegation form, and they have just five games to turn it around.
Tottenham had seemed on course for what would have been a huge win, leading Brighton at home deep into stoppage time. However, a fine goal from Georginio Rutter stole a point for the Seagulls and broke the hearts of many a home fan. Results elsewhere mean they are two points adrift of safety and five points behind Forest, who are 16th after they recorded a crucial comeback win against Burnley.
Leeds Home and Dry?
Another team at the bottom of the table also secured a massive win as Leeds thrashed Wolves 3-0 on home soil to leave them eight points clear of the drop once the round was complete. They have picked up back-to-back wins at just the right time. Though not mathematically safe, they will surely already have enough points given Spurs’ dreadful form. With an FA Cup semi-final up ahead, it is turning into a very enjoyable campaign for Leeds and their loyal fans.
Race for Europe Could be Tightest Battle
If north London duo Arsenal and Spurs do not turn their form around, the battles at the top and bottom could be over before the final weekend of the season. The race for European spots, however, is pretty much guaranteed to maintain interest right to the wire.
Liverpool scored a late winner to earn a barely deserved win over Everton in the first derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Results elsewhere mean that we may know the make-up, if not the order, of the top five, with the Reds seven points clear of Chelsea but just three behind Aston Villa and Manchester United.
The Red Devils managed a rather lucky win against Chelsea, while Villa won a thriller against Sunderland. The travelling Black Cats scored in the 86th and 87th minutes to make it 3-3, but Villa won the match in stoppage time.
Those were huge wins for the three clubs uncertain of Champions League football next term. But beneath them, just three points separate Fulham in 12th and Chelsea in sixth. In between them, Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton, Everton and Sunderland will all still be dreaming of a European adventure next term.
